THE STICKY YEARS

Watneys Red Barrel, Babycham, flared hipsters, tie-dyed t-shirts and of course very long hair. Yes..... It was the I970’s

Amongst a lively music scene on the UK’s south coast, guitarist Eddie Renouf, formally of Rusty Butler met a funky drummer called Martin O’Hara who was playing in a Worthing group called VHF. The meeting was to be the start of what became Sticky Wickit.

Vocalist and front man extraordinaire Tony Savva, previously of Samuel Prody (and also Rusty Butler) was playing in a Brighton band called Zoo when Eddie approached him to start the new band. By chance, an old school friend Andy Haselip was playing bass (also with Zoo) and both he and Tony decided to join the unnamed outfit.

At this time keyboard man Chris Dawson was playing gigs in a Bognor band called Felix. Andy occasionally stepped in to pIay bass and on hearing their version of America by The Nice, Eddie asked Chris to join the new band. Chris agreed and became the final member of ‘Sticky Wickit’ - named by Tony.

The band soon started playing the South Coast and London pub circuit and became well known for their energetic performances of original rock songs that had an edge of the progressive mixed with a funky rhythm section. A following soon developed and with the help of friends Paul Floyd (sound engineer), Phil Dimer (light show), and Martin Tyre (photos and recording) they developed a stage show that included dry ice, bubble machines and pyrotechnics.

With songs like the funk based ‘Better Get Back’ fantasy epic ‘Chaos Rules’ and the 12 minute rock opera ‘Sam’ - the climactic ending to the set - they started to fill many venues to bursting point.

Sadly. Sticky Wickit never had the chance to professionally record their material before splitting up in 1977. More than 30 years later the band, having gone very separate ways, had a reunion meeting and decided to make that recording become true.

The result is this album – around 18 months in the making.
